Waterville, ME - Playing for the first time in two weeks, the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team dug itself a 27-point first half hole at Thomas College on Friday evening. The Hornets were unable to recover, and dropped a 90-69 North Atlantic Conference decision to the Terriers. Thomas improves to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in NAC play, while Lyndon falls to 2-11 on the season and 0-4 in conference.
After Tyrese Harris (Fort Benning, GA) scored on the game's first possession, Thomas went on a 16-2 run to immediately take control of the game. The Terriers would take advantage of 12 first half Hornet turnovers and some poor Lyndon shooting to expand their lead to 52-25 at the break.
Lyndon showed some life at the start of the second half, as they outscored the Terriers, 11-2, in the first three minutes of the half to pull within 54-36. Thomas built the lead back to 65-43 following a Parker Cole jump shot with 12:45 left. The Hornets answered with a 9-0 run, with Zach Falkenburg's (Bridgeport, NY) layup cutting the Terrier lead to 65-52 with 8:05 to go. That would be as close as Lyndon would get, as Thomas would steady things and cruise to the victory.
Demetris Webster led Thomas with 15 points. Cole and Parker Desjardins added 14 points apiece and Kory Winch chipped in with ten points. Trevor Reed finished with nine points and a game high 13 rebounds. Antonio Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, VT) led the Hornets with 16 points. Falkenburg added 15 points and Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) also reached double figures with 11 points.
Thomas made 33 of 61 attempts (54.1%) while Lyndon only made 28 of 71 attempts (39.4%), including only nine of 31 (29.0%) from behind the three-point arc. Thomas dominated on the glass, outrebounding Lyndon 46-19.
The same two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at Thomas is set for 1:00 pm.
