Westfield, MA - Westfield State University used their size and length advantage to pull away from Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and come away with a 110-76 victory in the opening game of Westfield's annual Hampton Inn / Rick Martin Basketball Tournament. The Owls are unbeaten on the season at 3-0, while the Hornets fall to 1-2.
The game was closely contested in the early going. Westfield spurted in front, 19-11, following a three-point goal from JT Thompson, but Lyndon responded and narrowed the deficit to three at 23-20 following a Max Milton (Ithaca, NY) three-pointer at the 9:45 mark of the first half. The Owls would then take control with a 21-2 run over the next six minutes. The final few minutes of the half were back and forth, with Ty Johnson's three-pointer off of a Hornet turnover sending the hosts into halftime with a 54-31 advantage.
After Westfield grew their lead to 27 points in the opening minutes of the second half, Lyndon began to chip away. The Hornets got within 14 points following a Tyrese Harris (Fort Benning, GA) layup with 12:51 remaining. With 10:34 to go, Milton was fouled shooting a three and converted two of three free throws to bring Lyndon back again to within 14 points. A 9-2 Owl run over the next two minutes would end hopes of a Hornet comeback. Westfield would end the game on a 23-8 run to account for the final margin.
Justin Rennis led a balanced Westfield attack with 24 points and five assists. Brendon Hamilton posted a double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kumar Brown also scored 18 points, while Thompson chipped in 10 points.
Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) paces Lyndon with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Luke Fredsell (Whitesboro, NY) added 12 points and Harris dished out four assists.
Westfield made 43 of 76 shots from the floor (56.6%) to 28 of 67 (41.8%) for the Hornets. The Owls knocked down nine of 16 shots from behind the three point arc, while the Hornets only converted seven of 19 attempts from distance. Westfield also held a commanding 48-28 regounding advantage.
The Hornets return to action tomorrow at noon in the Tournament's consolation game. Lyndon will face Castleton University, an 82-70 loser to William Paterson in Friday's other contest.
