Box Score Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and SUNY Canton women's basketball teams squared off for the second time in less than 24 hours on Saturday afternoon. After Friday night's 42 point win the Hornets would find the going much more difficult in the rematch. The end result was the same, however, as the Hornets came away with a 73-62 North Atlantic Conference victory. With the win the Hornets improve to 9-14 on the season and 5-8 in NAC play. The Roos complete their season at 1-24 overall and 1-13 in conference.
Early on the game looked like it might become a repeat of Friday's contest, as Faith Poirier's (Portsmouth, NH) three-point goal gave Lyndon a 10-3 lead just over four minutes in. Canton would rally, however, and an Autumn Kunes layup followed by a Joie Culkin three pointer brought the gests back within two at 10-8. Two straight Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) baskets built the lead back to six before another Culkin three made the score 14-11 Lyndon after one quarter.
The Hornets extended their lead to double digits with a 7-0 run, capped by another Poirier three ball, to start the second quarter. Canton would rally to within four points following an Autumn Watkins three, but the Hornets would respond with a quick 8-0 burst featuring two Mitchell threes to take a 31-19 lead at the 1:27 mark. following a Culkin jumper another Poirier three built the Lyndon lead to 13 before Canton scored the final five points of the quarter to make the score 34-26, Hornets, heading into intermission.
Canton started the third quarter off quickly, scoring the first six points to make it a two-point game less than two minutes in. The Hornets briefly pushed their advantage back to six on a Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) basket and a pair of Mitchell free throws, but threes from Culkin and Watkins made it a tie game with 6:14 to go in the quarter. After Lyndon's Ashlynn Bardos (Beaumont, CA) knocked down a jump shot to put the Hornets back in front, Culkin connected again from long range to give Canton their first lead of the game at 41-40. The Roos would extend their lead to six points before Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) scored inside and Poirier drained another three to cut the Canton lead to 46-45 through three quarters.
After Watkins scored on the first possession of the final quarter, Poirier's three pointer tied things at 48-48. After the two teams exchanged scores, a Mitchell three put the Hornets in front for what turned out to be for good. The Hornets would gradually pull away from there, outscoring the Roos 25-12 over the final 8:24 to cruise to the victory.
Mitchell had a big all-around game in her final home contest, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Poirier knocked down six three-point goals for 18 points and Celley posted a double double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) chipped in with 12 points and a team best six assists.
Culkin scored a game high 26 points to pace the Roos. Kunes added 16 points and Watkins registered 15 points and a game high seven assists.
Saturday's game was the final home contest for Lyndon seniors Celley, Mitchell, and Moore. They were recognized for their contributions to the Hornet program prior to tip-off.
The Hornets will close out the regular season on Tuesday evening when they travel to Northern Vermont University-Johnson for a game that has significant NVU President's Cup implications. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
