Hornet women complete their sweep of UMaine-Presque Isle

Presque Isle, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team completed it's weekend sweep of the University of Maine at Presque Isle by posting a 62-54 North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets improve to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in conference with the win, while the loss drops the Owls to 3-17 on the season and 1-9 in NAC play.

The Hornets appeared to have control much of the game, but couldn't put away the Owls.  Shaylan Mosher's (Newark, VT) three-pointer gave Lyndon an early 9-4 advantge.  The Hornets maintained the small lead until just under four minutes into the second quarter, when UMPI's Mariah Dunbar drained a three-pointer to tie things at 21-21.  Another Dunbar three gave the Owls their first lead, but Lea Crompton's (Dunbar, NH) three tied things, then a pair of long balls from Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) put the Hornets back in front by six.  Lyndon eventually took a four point lead into the halftime break.

Lyndon maintained a slim lead for much of the third quarter, until Sarah Musselman's kayup tied things at 39-39.  Kylie Vining's steal and layup briefly gave the Owls back the lead, but baskets from Mosher and Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) put the Hornets back in front, 43-41 after three.

Lyndon opened a little daylight to start the fourth, as Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) knocked down a three-pointer to peon the quarter.  A Mosher jumper pushed the lead to seven and the Owls never got closer than three the rest of the game.

Mitchell led a balanced Hornet attack with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.  Mosher added 13 ponts and three steals while Crompton chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.  Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) recorded a near double double with ten points and a game high nine rebounds.  Dunbar led the Owls woth a game high 20 points.  Hunter Mercier was UMPI's only other double figure scorer, as she finished with 13 points.

The Hornets held UMPI to 25.0% shooting (16/64) for the game.  Lyndon shot 45.1% (23/51) from the floor, including 6/18 from behind the three-point arc.  The Owls stayed in the game by holding a 39-34 rebounding advantage andforcing 19 Hornet turnovers while only committing 13 themselves.

The Hornets will return home on Friday evening to face NAC leading Husson University.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
