Hornet women fall to Anna Maria in back and forth affair

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - Twice Wednesday afternoon the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team battled from behind to pull even with Anna Maria College.  The Hornets were unable to get over the hump, however, and when Anna Maria'a Brianna Riley put home a cross that slid all the way through the box the AMCATS were able to come away with a 4-3 victory.  anna Maria improves to 3-1 with the win while Lyndon remains winless in three starts.

Anna Maria took control early in the game, and Julianna Acosta's tally in the eighth minute gave the AMCATS the lead.  Deanna Baker added an unassisted goal in the 13th minute to make it 2-0.

After Anna Maria dominated the opening minutes, play began to even out.  Lyndon had a golden opportunity to gt on the scoreboard in the 34th minute when the AMCATS were called for a foul in the box.  Jessica Hillman's (gardener, ME) kick hit the crossbar, however, and her rebound goal was disallowed.  Neither team was able to find the net again the rest of the half and Anna Maria's 2-0 advantage stood up into halftime.

Anna Maria was calld for another foul in the box just over two minutes into the second half, but again the Hornets couldn't convert, as AMCAT goalkeeper Rachel Matloff turned away Lyndon's Kelsey Holland (Pembroke, NH).

The third time was the charm for the Hornets, as Eleanor Harrington (Fareham, Hampshire, UK) converted on Lyndon's third penalty kick of the match in the 62nd minute to get the Hornets on the scoreboard.  Eight minutes later Holland got behind the defense on a long through ball from EmmaLee Smith (Woodsville, NH) and beat Matloff to tie the game at 2-2.

Anna Maria moved back in front in the 73rd minute as Sydney Owen poked home her own rebound.  Lyndon was again able to answer, as in the 76th minute Hillman converted on a rebound of Harrington's shot to tie it up again at 3-3.  Less than two minutes later Riley would poke home a cross from Acosta that found its way through traffic in the box for what would turn out to be the game winner.

The Hornets will take to the road for the first time this weekend, as they head to Connecticut for a pair of non-conference mathups.  First, they will play at Mitchell College on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 3:30 pm.  The next day they complete the trip with a noon start at Albertus Magnus College.
