Two late goals propel Rivier past Hornet women

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - Two late Rivier University goals broke open a scoreless, evenly played game and sent the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team to a tough loss in Saturday afternoon's season opener.

After hitting the post with her first penalty kick several minutes earlier, the Raiders' Ashley Glynn cashed in on her second opportunity, driving a low liner past Hornet goalkeeper Lauren Young (Concord, VT) in the 83rd minute for the game's first goal.  Brittany Fletcher poked in a rebound in the 88th minute for Rivier's other score.

The first half was played largely in the midfield, with both teams managing to get off six shots.  The Raiders outshot the Hornets, 12-4, in the second half, but Lyndon owned a 51% possession time advantage over the game.  The Raiders were awarded five corner kicks to none for Lyndon.  Rivier goalkeeper Kasey Smith made four saves in recording the shutout and picking up the win.  Starting Hornet keeper Victoria McCormack (East Lyme, CT) made three stops in a scoreless first half, while Young stopped six shots in the second stanza.

The Hornets return to the pitch next Sunday, September 8th, when they face Bay Path University in a game that will be played at Jay Peak Resort.  Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
