Hornet women run away from Johnson in regular season finale

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team closed out their regualr season with a 76-41 win over NVU-Johnson on Wednesday evening.  With the win the Hornets improve to 13-11 on the season and finish 8-6 in North Atlantic Conference play.  The Badgers finish their season at 2-22, and went winless in 14 NAC contests.  Lyndon's victory also gives the Hornets a sweep of the season series and earns a point in the chase for the NVU President's Cup, the annual competition for athletic superiority between the two NVU campuses.

The Hornets and Badgers battled on even terms in the early going.  With Johnson leading 12-10, Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) knocked down back to back jumpers to give Lyndon the lead, and the Hornets were able to extend their advantage to six after one.  The Hornets maintained a single digit advantage throughout most of the second quarter, and took a 33-24 lead to halftime.

After Johnson's Mariah Ramos knocked down a three on the first posession of the second half, Lyndon's Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) responded with a jumper to ignite a 14-0 Hornet run that put Lyndon firmly in control.  After Ramos scored to break the run, Lauren Young (Danville, VT) scored back to back baskets and Tayler Courchesne (Wilmington, VT) followed with a basket of her own to give the Hornets a commanding 53-29 lead after three.  Johnson was never able to mount a rally in the final period, as the Hornets cruised to victory.

Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) led the Hornets with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) notched a double double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Young added 11 points and Ashlynn Bardos (Beaumont, CA) pulled down 12 boards.  Ramos and Lindsey LaPerle scored 11 points each to pace the Badgers.  Ramos also recorded 12 rebounds.

The Hornets have earned the #4 seed for the North Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament.  Lyndon will host a quarterfinal matchup against #5 University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
