Hornet volleyball falls twice at UMaine-Presque Isle quad match

Presque Isle, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team traveled to the top of Maine on Saturday, as they competed in a quad match hosted by the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  The Hornets dropped their non-conference opening match 3-0 to the University of Maine at Fort Kent, then fell to the host UMaine-Presque Isle Owls, 3-0, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.  With today's results the Hornets remain winless in 13 overall matches and two conference starts.  UMFK improves to 13-8 on the season following their wins over the Hornets and NVU-Johnson today, while UMPI is now 7-13 overall and 1-1 in NAC play following their split with the Hornets and NVU-Johnson.

UMaine-Fort Kent 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-3, 25-2, 25-5)

The Bengals, members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the United States collegiate Athletic Association, dominated play throughout.  Rachel Nance led UMFK with 11 kills, while Beatriz Garrido recorded 15 assists and Heather Harness posted 15 aces and seven digs.  Fahari Achinda (Hinesburg, VT) had Lyndon's only kill, with an assist from Emily Clancy (Durham, CT).  Vanessa Soares (Naugatuck, CT) logged a team best four digs.

UMaine-Presque Isle 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-3)

The Hornets hung in early in the opening set before the host Owls pulled away.  The Owls then cruised through the final two sets.  Taylor Miller led a balanced Owl team with four kills and two digs.  setter Laura Aroz had a big match with 11 assists and 15 aces.  Meanwhile the Hornets couldn't get much going on attack, as they went without a kill for the whole match and fell victim to 33 Owl aces.  Cassie Black (Tolland, CT) posted a match high five digs for Lyndon.

The Hornets will return to play next Saturday with a NAC quad match at Maine Maritime Academy.  Lyndon will take on the host Mariners at 10:00 am, then follow with a match against Husson University at 2:00 pm.
