Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, coming away with a 76-49 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  With the win the Hornets improve to 10-8 on the season and 5-3 in North Atlantic Conference play.  The Owls fall to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in conference.

Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) scored the first two baskets of the game then Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) converted a layup off of a turnover to give Lyndon a 6-0 lead right out of the gate.  Later in the opening quarter, with the Hornets holding a 15-8 lead, Ellie Harrington (Fareham, Hampshire, UK) found Celley for a layup, then capped the 7-0 run with a three pointer to put Lyndon in front 22-8 after one.  Lyndon extended their lead to 46-21 at the half and 59-33 after three and coasted to the win.

Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) led the Hornet attack with 17 points, including making three of five from beyond the arc.  Tayler Courchesne (Wilmington, VT) also reached double figures with ten points.  Celley, Mitchell, and Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) each chipped in with eight points, with Celley grabbing seven rebounds and Mitchell dishing out six assists and coming up with five steals.

The Hornets connected on 30 of 68 shots (44.1%) including eight of 20 (40.0%) from beyond the arc while the Owls only converted 21 of 64 (32.8%) attempts, including four of 13 (30.8%) from distance.  UMPI held a 43-40 rebounding advantage but the Hornets forced 18 Owl turnovers while committing only eight of their own.

The Hornets and Owls will turn around and play again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
