Hornet women pull away late for NAC win over Thomas

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team outscored visiting Thomas College 20-12 in the fourth quarter of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference contest and came away with a 64-54 win.  The Hornets evened their overall record at 7-7 on the season and move to 3-3 in NAC play.  The Terriers fell to 4-11 on the campaign and 3-3 in conference.

The Hornets took a two-point advantage after the first quarter, but the Terriers took control in the second session, building a 30-19 advantage with less than three minutes remaining in the half.  The Hornets responded by scoring the last seven points of the half, capped by a three-pointer from Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) at the buzzer that narrowed the deficit to four at intermission.

Lyndon finally regained the lead when Ellie Harrington (Fareham, Hampshire, UK) found Alisha Celley (Cabot, VT) for a layup with 4:20 to go in the third quarter.  The teams then traded scores, with the Hornets taking a 44-42 lead into the final period.  After Malorie Weaver scored on a putback to pull Thomas even, the Hornets regained the lead on Lauren Young's (Danville, VT) jumper, and pulled away from there.  Lyndon forced nine Thomas turnovers in the quarter, contributing to the Hornet surge.

Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) played a strong all-around game to lead the Hornets.  She finished with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Crompton also reached double figures with 17 points while handing out five assists.  Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) pulled down a team best eight rebounds.  Addie Brinkman paced Thomas with 12 points and nine rebounds and Weaver chipped in with ten points.

The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they tip off at 3:00 pm in a non-conference matchup at Green Mountain College.
