Hornet volleyball drops a pair at Green Mountain tri-match

Poultney, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team came up short in both matches that they played at today's tri-match hosted by Green Mountain College.  The Hornets fell to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in their first match, then dropped a decision to the host Eagles, now an NAIA program, in their second match.  Lyndon is now 0-11 on the season.  St. Joseph's improved to 2-4 on the season, while Green Mountain evened their record at 3-3.

St. Joseph's 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-17)

All three sets followed similar patterns, with the Bears jumping out to an early advantage, then maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the sets.  Brianna Marzarro had a strong match for St. Joseph's, recording seven kills.  Setter Makayla Beehler posted 14 assists and nine service aces.  Faith Richard (Acushnet, MA) led the Hornets with foru kills, five aces, and four digs.  Emily Clancy (Durham, CT) added three kills and eight digs for Lyndon.

Green Mountain 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-15)

After Green Mountain jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, the Hornets took advantage of several Eagle errors to pull even at 13-13.  The Eagles then ran off eight straight points on Jannelle O'Connell's serve to go up 21-13.  Lyndon responded with an 8-1 run of their own, featuring a pair of aces from Clancy and one from Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT), to pull the Hornets within 22-21.  Green Mountain was able to score the next three points to pull out the set.

Green Mountain got out to early leads in each of the next two sets and cruised to wins to take the match.  Danielle Sill, with six kills, and Bryanna Hopple, with ten digs and 13 assists, led the Eagles.  Richard and Clancy recorded seven digs each for Lyndon and Samantha Theriault (West Ossipee, NH) added six digs.

The Hornets are off until Monday, September 24th, when they travel to Northern Vermont University-Johnson for a non-conference match which is also a part of the NVU President's Cup Challenge.  Play will begin at 6:00 pm.
