Hornet women fall to Colby-Sawyer on Senior Day

Lyndonville, VT - The Lyndon State College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2018 campaign on Sunday afternoon, falling 26-8 to Colby-Sawyer College on Senior Day.  The Hornets finish the season with a 5-7 overall record and a 1-6 mark in North Atlantic Conference play.  The Chargers improve to 9-5 on the season and 5-2 in the NAC.

Colby-Sawyer blitzed the Hornets in the opening minutes, tallying five goals in the first 4:31 of the contest.  Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, VT) scored unassisted just 23 seconds into the game, and Sarah Morin (Pelham, NH) followed with another score 31 seconds later.  Morin then converted a free position shot and Briana Coture (South Hadley, MA) followed with a pair of goals to make it 5-0 Chargers.

Amanda Hadley (Rutland, VT) got the Hornets on the board with 24:48 to go in the half when she took a pass from Gwyn Stahl (Whitinsville, MA) and found the net.  Two minutes later Mikayla Hodge (Bradford, VT) scored with an assist from Taylor Cavaliero (Somers, NY) to cut the Charger lead to 5-2.

Lavigne scored an unassisted goal at the 20:47 mark and converted a free position shot 42 seconda later to make it 7-2, Colby-Sawyer.  Hodge then converted a free position of her own, but Colby-Sawyer's Jess Tattersall answered with an unassisted goal.  Elizabeth Start (Randolph, VT)  found Hodge at the 18:04 mark to make it 8-4, but Brittany Ireland (Amherst, NH) converted a free position, then found Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, NH) to make it 10-4 Chargers with 16:17 remaining in the half.

Start found Cavaliero at the 15:07 mark to cut the margin to 10-5, but the Chargers would take firm control of the game by running off seven unanswered goals over the final 15 minutes of the half.  Coture and Lavigne each had two goals in the run, while Bailey Starr (Barre, VT), Morin, and Ireland taiiled one time each to give Colby-Sawyer a 17-5 halftime advantage.

Lavigne and Coture opened the second half with a pair of free position goals before Hodge stopped the run with an unassisted goal at the 23:25 mark.  The Chargers then ran off five more unanswered goals, with Molly Mulcahy (Nashua, NH), Allison Piracini (Tewskbury, MA), Grace Vosburgh (Ludlow, VT), Ireland, and Schuster each finding the net once.  That made it 24-6, Chargers, with 12:18 remaining in the contest.

Hodge found Cavaliero at the 9:29 mark for Lyndon's seventh goal.  Vosburgh then converted a free position shot and Ireland found Shae-Lyn Walker (Newington, NH) for a score.  Another Hodge to Cavaliero goal with just 24 seconds to go produced the 26-8 final result.

Kailyn Lapham (Medway, MA) went the distance in goal for the Chargers, making 12 saves to garner the win.  Paige Daley (Pleasant Valley, NY) played the first half and took the loss for Lyndon while making eight saves.  Hadley relieved Daley in goal in the second half and recorded three additional stops.

Sunday marked the final appearance for Lyndon seniors Cavaliero, Hadley, Hodge, Stahl, and Start.  They were recognized, thanked for their contributions to the program, and greeted by their families in a brief pre-game ceremony.

Lyndon compteles its season with a program record five wins.  Colby-Sawyer has clinched a berth in the NAC Conference Touranment and will learn their opponent and seed following the conclusion of all regular season games.
