Box Score Franklin, MA - In a game where both teams produced their highest scoring outputs of the season the Lyndon State College women's lacrosse team outgunned Dean College, 21-15, on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs remain winless in ten starts.
Foreshadowing things to come, Lyndon's Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, VT) won the opening draw and scored unassisted just 24 seconds into the game. Elizabeth Start (Randolph, VT) followed suit with an unassisted goal of her own just 29 seconds later to put the Hornets in front, 2-0. Dean answered with a pair of goals, one from Sydnie Gomes (New Bedford, MA) and one from Makayla Fisher (Irvington, NJ), to even the score at 2-2 less than two minutes into the game.
Genisis Johnson (Norwalk, CT) gave Dean its only lead of the contest at the 26:07 mark, but Lyndon's Taylor Cavaliero (Somers, NY) respoded with back to back goals to put the Hornets back in front, 4-3, less than five minutes in. Gomes tied things at 23:37, but Start sandwiched a pair of unassisted scores around a Cavaliero to Hodge goal to give the Hornets a three goal advantage.
After the Bulldogs' Lauryn Wilks (Hartford, CT) found Fisher to cut the margin to two, Start and Johnson traded goals to leave the score at 8-6, Lyndon, midway through the opening half.
Hodge and Cavaliero both found the back of the net to put the Hornets in front, 10-6, but Dean's Briana Saunders converted a free position shot and Fisher scored unassisted to make it a two goal game again. At that point, Lyndon took control of the contest by scoreing five unanswered goals in less than six minutes. Hodge started the run with a pair of tallies, then Cavaliero converted feeds from Hodge and Start. Hodge capped off the run with her sixth score of the half, giving Lyndon a 15-8 lead with 2:24 to go in the opening stanza. Fisher's goal in the final minute left the Hornets with a six goal advantage heading into halftime.
Johnson's free position score opened the second half, but the Hornets responded with a Hodge goal off of an assist from Michaela Columbia (Orleans, VT). After Wilks and Hodge traded scores, back to back free position goals from Wilks and Gomes cut the Lyndon advantage to 17-13 with 18:49 remaining. That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get, however, as Start found Cavaliero for her sixth goal of the game, then Hodge followed with her ninth tally to extend the lead back to six. The teams then traded goals twice in the final 8:36 to account for the final score.
In addition to scoring nine goals, Hodge also recorded ten draw controls and five ground balls. Cavaliero finished with six goals, two assists, and four ground balls, while Start played an outstanding overall game, finishing wiht five goals, four assists, eight draw controls, six ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Paige Daley (Pleasant Valley, NY) picked up the win in goal while recording seven saves. Fisher scored four times to lead Dean, while Johnson, Gomes, and Wilks picked up three goals apiece. Jamaya Cleveland (Greensboro, GA) stopped 17 shots in goal and took the loss.
The Hornets outshot the Bulldogs, 43-27, and held a 20-17 advantage in ground balls and a 21-17 edge in draw controls.
the Hornets are scheduled to return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Thomas College in a 1:00 pm North Atlantic Conference contest. Dean hosts Wheelock College on Wednesday.
