Hornet women pull away from St. Joseph down the stretch to capture season opener

Box Score

Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team took control in the fourth quarter and earned a hard fought 79-69 victory over the College of St. Joseph in the season opener and the opening game of the Northern Vermont University Tip-Off Classic at NVU-Johnson on Thursday evening.

Thursday's game was very tightly contested for three quarters, as the two teams entered the final stanza tied at 45.  Lyndon's Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) drained a three-pointer to put the Hornets in front.  Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) followed with another three to make it a six point game and the Hornets held off the Saints the rest of the way to come away with the win.

Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH) led the Hornets with 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.  Crompton added 21 points and Poirier tallied 17.  Madison Akins topped four double figure scorers to pace St. Joseph.

The Hornets will return to Johnson for the second round of the tip-Off Classic on Saturday.  They will face Vermont Technical College in a 5:00 pm start.
