Hornets make plays down the stretch to knock off Vermont Tech

Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team completed a sweep of the NVU Tip-Off Classic hosted by NVU-Johnson on Saturday night.  For the second time in two games the Hornets entered the foruth quarter tied, and for the second time they made the big plays down the stretch and came away with a 59-53 win over Vermont Technical College.  Lyndon is now 2-0 on the campaign while Vermont Tech falls to 1-2.

Vermont Tech broke in front partway through the first quarter.  After Lyndon battled back to a 28-26 lead six minutes into the second quarter the Knights went on a 9-0 run to move back in front 35-28 at the halftime break.

Vermont Tech's Gabrielle Norwood scored the first basket of the second half to give the Knights their biggest lead at 37-28.  After the teams traded baskets, Lyndon's Rylee Moore (Livermore, ME) scored off of a feed from Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) to ignite a 10-0 run.  A pair of free throws from Crompton capped the run and put Lyndon back in front, 40-39.  The lead then went back and forth, with Lauren Young's (Danville, VT) layup creating a 46-46 tie heading into the final quarter.

The Hornet defense stiffened to start the final period, as Lyndon held Vermont Tech scoreless for the first 4:36 of the period.  Meanwhile, Alissa Mitchell (Milton, NH), Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH), and Moore converted layups to give Lyndon a 52-46 lead.  TYhe Knights were never able to get it back to a single posession game as Lyndon held on for the win.

Moore paced Lyndon with a double double, scoring 14 points and grabbing ten rebounds.  Crompton added 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists.  Poirier chipped in 12 points and Victoria Carlson (East Haven, CT) grabbed ten rebounds.  Jordanna Morris led Vermont Tech with 22 points, 18 rebounds, and five assists while Norwood added 14.  Mitchell and Morris were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Hornets will return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Castleton University.  tip-off is set for 7:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
