Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College baseball team dropped the opening game with Colby-Sawyer College 4-3 before halting game two with a 3-2 lead after five innings Wednesday afternoon at Skip Pound Field. That game will be resumed tomorrow, at Colby-Sawyer before the two face off for another doubleheader.
Game 1
Both pitchers worked the strike zone well to start off the game as neither team could muster a run over the first three innings. The Hornets were the first to break the scoreless game as Codi Smith (Hartford, Vt.) singled to right field, plating Ryan Cordeiro (Rollinsford, N.H.) and Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, Vt.) for the 2-0 lead.
However, the Chargers answered right back in the top of the fifth with three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) doubled to left to bring home Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) and Andrew Pratt (New Sharon, Maine). In the next at-bat, Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) grounded the ball to the pitcher who threw it past first base which brought home Avellino and then Unczur was thrown out trying to take second base.
The Chargers retired the Hornets in order in the bottom half of the inning before adding an insurance run in the top of the sixth for a 4-2 advantage. Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Nathan Stewart launched a double to left center to plate pinch-runner, Kevin Tufo (Colchester, Conn.) to cut the lead to 4-3. Unfortunately, the Hornets were stopped there as the Chargers took the first game.
Cordeiro and Trevor Markey (Ocoee, Fla.) led the Hornets with two hits each, with Cordeiro adding a run. Smith added two RBIs. Jeff Williams suffered his second loss on the mound after pitching a complete game allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six.
Avellino and Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) finished with two hits each, while Avellino added a run and two RBIs. Ryan Glendye pitched the complete game for his third win of the season, giving up six hits and three runs while fanning four batters.
Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Chargers put up two runs in the top of the second. A single from Liam Datres De la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) plated Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) to get things going. After a walk, Musco hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.).
The rain became steady as the second game proceeded but both teams would go scoreless over the next two innings. It was Lyndon's turn to get things going in the bottom of the fifth though as they posted three runs, putting pressure on the Charger defense to make plays. Jake Perkins (Hartford, Vt.) led the inning off with a single and then advanced to second as the ball was booted further into left field. Perkins advanced to third on a wild pitch before Tufo drew a pinch-hit walk. David Laroche (Franklin, Vt.) followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to left to bring home Perkins. Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) then grounded a ball back to the pitcher but a throw to second to get Tufo went wide, leaving runners on first and second. Things continued to get worse for the Charger defense. On a strike out Tufo broke for third base and slid hard into third as the throw came in low and bounced off of Tufo's foot and into foul territory, allowing Tufo to run home to tie the game at 2-2. Eason Jr. then singled up the middle, bringing home Rollins for the 3-2 lead. The Chargers finally got out of the inning after a pop up to the pitcher.
The coaches and umpires assessed field conditions before the start of the sixth inning and decided to halt the game.
The teams will resume play at 12:30 p.m. at Colby-Sawyer.
