Spartans Overpower Hornets

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. – Lyndon State College continued North Atlantic Conference play Wednesday evening against Castleton University, leaving defeated with a 21-1 loss

The offense came from numerous sources, as 13 different Spartans scored at least one goal during the contest. Grace Johnson and Erin Shuttle led Castleton with three goals apiece, while Emily Cross continued her strong play with two goals and three assists for a team-high five points.

Hannah Braman started the scoring for Castleton just 1:39 into the game, and then Cross found Nadine Downing for a goal 32 seconds later. Just 25 seconds after Johnson scored her first goal, Mikayla Hodge put Lyndon State on the board with her team-leading 11th goal of the season, but that would prove to be the Hornets' only goal of the match.

The Spartans pulled away thanks to contributions from Tiffany Danyow, who earned one goal and three assists, and Megan Wood, who finished with two goals and one assist. Bre Babiarz scored two goals late in the first half, while Katie Feeney earned her first goal of the season and Kirsten Kruk picked up her second goal of the year right at the end of the opening half.

In the second half, Castleton worked on its possession game, but still converted four goals, including the first career collegiate goal for Maddy Haggerty. With 9:12 remaining in the game, Danyow set up Erin McKenna for her first goal of the season, and then McKenna closed out the scoring with another tally with 2:11 left on the clock.

Downing finished the game with five draw controls as well as four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Samantha Hebb made one save in the first 30 minutes before being replaced in goal by Bria Willis, who played the entire second half and finished with a career-high four saves.

Lyndon State (0-6, 0-5 NAC) was led by Hodge, who earned two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers besides her goal. Samantha Turgeon played the first half in net for the Hornets and finished with three saves, while Amanda Hadley collected two saves in the second half.

Field/weather depending, Lyndon will host Green Mountain College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Castleton (6-6, 6-0 NAC) will travel to face Johnson State April 20th
