Mariners Sail Pass Hornets in Conference Play

CASTINE, Maine – The Lyndon State College women's lacrosse team got North Atlantic Conference play underway taking a 20-7 loss to Maine Maritime Academy Saturday afternoon on Ritchie Field.

Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) won the first draw and took the ball in for a goal, to put the Hornets on the board at 29:33, but Tori Cooper capitalized on a free position shot to tie the game at 1-1. Hodge found teammate Taylor Cavaliero (Somers, N.Y.) for a goal at 26:06. The Mariners responded with four-unanswered goals on two goals from both Briana Obshatkin and Shelby O'Neil to take a 5-2 led. Hodge secured a hat trick at 17:25 remaining in the first half, to cut the Mariners' lead to two goals.

The two teams exchanged goals back and forth until the Mariners went on a five-goal run to close out the first half with a 12-5 lead. Madison Barry grabbed her first goal of the game to open up the second half, on a pass from Haley Eckert, and the Mariners held the Hornets to just two goals, scored both by Carmen Mears (Barre, Vt.), in the second half en route to the victory.

Hodge and Carmen Mears (Barre, Vt.) led the Hornets with three goals each, Hodge also led the team with a game-high 10 draw controls. Cavaliero, Amanda Hadley, and Hodge scooped up three ground balls each.

Cooper led the Mariners with six goals, four ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover, while O'Neil added five goals and an assist. Both Cooper and O'Neil tallied three free position goals to set a new single-game record. Obshatkin recorded four goals and an assist, while scooping up four ground balls and leading all players with four caused turnovers and Leah Libby (Paris, Maine) added two goals. Barry, Charlette Bradley (Slidell, La.), and Knight accounted for the Mariners' other scoring.

Sierra James was sharp in net for the Mariners, earning the victory for the Mariners with seven saves. Lyndon's Amanda Hadley (Rutland, Vt.) recorded 10 saves in the loss.

Lyndon (0-2, 0-1 NAC) travels to Thomas College on Wednesday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Maine Maritime (2-0, 1-0 NAC) hosts Castleton University Saturday, March 25th at 3:30 p.m.
