Tough Weekend for Hornets

CASTINE, Maine – On Saturday afternoon, the Lyndon State Women's basketball team continued North Atlantic Conference play facing the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in Smith Gymnasium, leaving the host team with a 90-56 victory. 

The Hornets were able to start the game off with a 6-0 lead.  Quickly fighting back, the Mariners scored seven-unanswered points.  After an Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) jumper, the Hornets took a brief 8-7 lead, but the Mariners scored eight-straight to take a 15-8 lead.

Maine Maritime never relinquished the lead, building as much as a 22-point advantage (43-21) at halftime, and cruising to the 90-56 victory.

Thompson and Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) led the Hornets with 16 points each, while Hodge grabbed the double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Mackenzie Vosburgh (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) led the Mariners with a career-high 20 points. Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) tallied 16 points and pitched in Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) added 12 points.

The Mariners improve to 13-7 on the season and 9-4 in NAC play, while the Hornets fall to 4-15 overall and 3-10 in the conference. Lyndon plays host to New England College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10.  Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, February 9 when they travel to take on Maine-Farmington at 5:30 p.m.
