Hornets unable to keep pace with Mariners

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – On Friday night, the Lyndon State Women's Basketball team (3-9, 2-5 NAC) faced off against Maine Maritime Academy (6-6, 3-3 NAC), allowing the visitors to end the night on a 63-44 win.

Off the jump, the Mariners full court pressed the Hornets, causing for multiple turnovers allowing the Hornets to deposit seven points to the Mariners eighteen within the first quarter. Out of her fourteen points, Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) cashed in nine of them within the first ten minutes. Five of the seven points for the Hornets came from free throws.

Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) collected half of the points in the second quarter for the Hornets as they answered 12 to the Mariners 17. By the end of the half the Mariners were up 35 to 19.

Within the first two minutes of the third quarter, the Mariners drilled in two layups and a jump-shot to the Hornets single free-throw. Both teams were then held scoreless for a while until Tess Clark (Spring, Tex.) drove the lane for a lay-up. Allison Brown (Monroe, N.H.) quickly answered back, draining a three off an assist from Samantha Thurston (Bath, N.H.). Swapping baskets, the Mariners continued their lead ending the third quarter up 50-27.

In the final stanza, the Hornets were able to outscore the Mariners 17-13. The visitors left with a win in their pocket, 63-44.

For the Hornets, Hodge cashed in her third straight double-double, gaining 13 points and 13 rebounds. Brown added 12 points and Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) pitched in 6 points and 5 rebounds.

The Mariners were led by McLean with 14 points and 4 rebounds along with Alayne Felix's 14 points and 5 rebounds.

Lyndon plays host to Husson tomorrow, Saturday, January 16th with a 1:00PM tip-off.
