Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's soccer team played Thomas College in a conference match-up Saturday, losing 4-1.
Thomas wasted little time mounting attacks into Hornet territory and getting looks at the goal. Within the first thirty minutes, the Terriers made ten shots and tested Hornet keeper Johanna Sargent (West Brookfield, Vt.) four times but to no avail. Although the Terriers possessed the ball more than the Hornets, the Hornets had a few attacks of their own with senior Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) but each time came up empty.
It would take over 37 minutes until someone would find the back of the net, and that would Bronte Howorth in the 38th minute. After receiving a pass from Emily Dufour, Howorth, from about 30 yards out, had room to launch a shot at the goal. Sargent was unable to reach the high shot as it soared into the net. Howorth wasn't done there.
Less than four minutes later, Lauren Pelletier's corner kick found Howorth in front of the net to push the lead to 2-0. Just two and a half minutes later Cassie Contigiani collided with a charging Sargent and Hornet defender at the edge of the box. Contigiani made it to her feet to knock the ball into the open net for a score of 3-0.
The Hornets did not give up and came back in the second half with a more focused attack that yielded more shots on goal. Yet the Hornets could not get the ball in the net.
In the 78th minute, a pass from Contigiani to Kajsa Kaufeldt would yield a fourth goal for the Terriers.
The Hornets would not be held scoreless today though. In the 85th minute, a lead pass from Sheridan would find a sprinting Jordan Manning (Hardwick, Vt.) who put it by Terrier keeper Paige Leary for her second goal of the season. The game would end 4-1 in favor of the visiting Terriers.
The Hornets (1-5-1) are back on the field Tuesday at 4:00pm to host Plymouth State for a non-conference match.
