Lyndon falls in SJC Autumn Invitational consolation match

STANDISH, Maine - Winless in three tournament games, Husson managed to salvage a 3-1 over Lyndon (25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19) in the consolation game of the annual St. Joseph's College Autumn Invitational.

Bailey Cote led the charge for the Eagles with 11 kills and an outstanding .647 attack percentage while Alexandra deHertogh dealt seven aces with four kills, six digs and five block solos. Wilson added 12 digs and Hannon contributed 15 assists in the Husson triumph.

For the Hornets, Abbey Greene (Exeter, R.I.) boasted a match-best nine kills, Kelleigh Murtagh chipped in with five kills, four aces and six digs, Laura Drake (Hinsdale, Mass.) added six kills, nine assists, three aces and seven digs, and Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.) posted four kills, 11 assists and seven digs in the team's finale.

Earlier in the day, Bates topped Lyndon 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19). The Bobcats were not dominant on the attack, posting a pedestrian .081 hitting percentage, but managed to pull off a sweep with the help of 21 service aces, including nine from Nicole Cueli.

For Bates, Abby Leberman and Gabby O'Leary tallied five kills apiece while Cueli and Augy Silver both contributed 11 digs in the shutout triumph.

For Lyndon (2-3), Greene accumulated six kills with seven digs, Liz Mainville (North Smithfield, R.I.)  added three aces and five digs and Murtagh chipped in with a team-high nine digs in the loss.

On the opening night of the event, Lyndon blanked Husson, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23).

Greene led the Hornets with five kills while Joy Piper (Belmont, N.H.) added four kills and six digs and Drake tallied three kills, four aces, five assists and 14 digs in the victory. Murtagh also played well and posted 10 digs versus the Eagles.

Husson was unable to overcome a lackluster hitting effort (-.075) despite solid performances by several individuals, including Nia Arranaga, who belted seven aces with three kills and a pair of blocks, and Kayla Hannon, who added a double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs to her credit. Kristen Atwood contributed five kills with one error in 13 bids and Sarah Wilson chipped in with 21 digs in the setback.

In Lyndon second match, Saint Joseph's downed the Hornets Lyndon 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-10). The duo of Felicia Wachowiak and Victoria Huntley racked up 14 kills combined (seven apiece) while the latter added four aces and five kills to her stat line against the Hornets.

Shadai Gosselin continued to play at a high level with four aces and four digs while playing all around and Alli Hollander chimed in with 15 assists and seven digs in the sweep. Abbey McPhee also added a team-best 10 digs in the nightcap.

The Hornets were unable to capitalize on the momentum gained in their earlier match, producing just six kills with 17 errors in 58 attack attempts against the Monks. Stahl tallied 10 digs while Drake came up with seven digs in the loss.

For her efforts, Stahl was named to the All-Tournament Team. For the eve with 23 assists and 31 digs during tourney play.
