Hornets lose four at SJC Autumn Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STANDISH, ME – Lyndon hit the road for a second consecutive weekend to take part in the 2013 Saint Joseph's College Autumn Invitational Tournament at the Harold Alfond Center. On Friday, the Hornets opened play with a pair of losses to Husson and Bates, the reigning tournament champion, by 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 10-25, 25-16) and 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-16) scores, respectively.

In the match versus the Eagles, Lindsay Chapman recorded 15 kills and 25 digs and Casey Lopes tallied nine kills and 19 digs to lead the winners. The Hornets received a double-double (11 kills, 10 digs) effort from Morgan Diltz (Moultonborough, N.H.) in the loss.

Diltz collected six kills and two assists and teammate Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.) added three kills and five assists but it was not enough to prevent the Bobcats from walking off with a 3-1 match victory.

On Saturday, fell 3-0 to eventual tourney champion St. Jospeh's before facing Husson once again in the tournament's consolation game. Despite an outstanding effort, the Hornets dropped the match by a score of 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-7).

The contest proved to be very interesting, as Lyndon State – which entered the match with one set-victory in 10 attempts – came to life in the tourney's closing time slot. In the end, the Hornets' attack error total (27) proved to be too much to overcome, as the Eagles took advantage of seven Lyndon miscues in the deciding set.

Lopes put up 11 kills, three service aces and 17 digs, Chapman contributed 10 kills, three aces, 19 digs and eight total blocks, Emma Plouffe added 10 kills and Ryan Hood tallied 31 assists and 13 digs.

For the Hornets, Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) boasted eight kills and nine digs, Diltz contributed seven kills, three aces and seven digs, Abbey Greene (Exeter, R.I.) tallied five kills and 14 digs, and Stahl chipped in with 16 assists, five kills and six digs. Laura Drake (Hinsdale, Mass.) also played well and delivered eight aces, 10 assists, 10 digs and three kills in the hard-fought loss.

Saint Joseph's sophomore Felicia Wachowiak was selected as the Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading all tourney participants with 44 kills and 14 solo blocks while posting the third-highest attack percentage (.230) during the Monks' four matches.

Senior libero Erica Russi, who tallied 51 digs and 11 service aces, and freshman setter Mariah Hebert, who eclipsed the tourney's assists list with 105 over four games and also notched 10 aces, both claimed All-Tournament honors for the Royal Blue.

Also claiming All-Tourney accolades were Laryssa Schepel and Chandler McGrath of Bates College, Husson University's Lindsay Chapman and Diltz.
