Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team hosted Norwich University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The visiting Cadets dominated both games, improving to 12-15 on the season in the process. The Hornets fell to 2-12.
Game 1 - Norwich 45, VTSU Lyndon 11
The Cadets plated 30 runs in the first two innings and ran away with the game. Norwich pounded out 35 hits, including 13 doubles, a triple from Madison DeCota, and a home run from Courtney Thomas. The Cadets also capitalized on 13 Hornet errors, which resulted in 35 of the runs being unearned.
Thomas led the Cadet hit parade with six. She drove in nine runs and scored six times. Jessica Zalucki added five hits, four RBIs, and six runs scored. Charlii Carbajal Sanchez and Emily Munson had four hits apiece.
Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) reached base four times for the Hornets, with a hit and three walks. She scored twice. Alyssa Gerrish (Fairfax, VT) had a pair of hits for the Hornets.
DeCota started in the circle for Norwich and earned the win, allowing only an unearned run and four hits while striking out five over 3.2 innings. Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) pitched a complete game for Lyndon and took the loss.
Game 2 - Norwich 17, VTSU Lyndon 4
The Hornets were more competitive early, but Norwich pulled away to complete the sweep. Ellie Laroche had four hits, including a pair of doubles, drove in two runs, and scored four times. Carbajal Sanchez had three hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Brianna Vitale had a single and a double with four RBIs.
Sarah Collier (Hardwick, VT) doubled for Lyndon and five other Hornets all collected base hits.
Delia Mannion pitched the first three innings to collect the win for Norwich. She allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts. McNamara again went the distance in taking the loss.
The Hornets will get back into North Atlantic Conference play with a home doubleheader against the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
