Game Recap: Softball |

Hornet softball can't get past VTSU Johnson

Lyndonville, VT - Three days after dropping a pair of games at Vermont State University Johnson, the Vermont State University Lyndon softball team was hoping that a change of venue to their home field would lead to a different outcome.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, the Badger bats remained hot, powering Johnson to another doubleheader sweep.  The first game of the twin bill was a North Atlantic Conference game, while the second contest was non-conference.  With the sweep the Badgers improved to 6-17 overall and 3-5 in NAC play.  The Hornets fell to 2-8 on the season and 0-6 in conference.

Game 1 - VTSU Johnson 14, VTSU Lyndon 1

The Badgers pounded out 13 hits and plated six runs in both the third and seventh innings to cruise to the win.  Hannah Corvino had three hits and three runs batted in for the Badgers.  Madyson Stingle, Kristie Zator, and Kamryn Devero added two hits apiece for the Badgers.  Corvino allowed three hits and struck out 12 against three walks to pick up the complete game victory.

Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH), Megan Richardson (Essex Junction, VT), and Chloe Murphy (Manchester, NH) had Lyndon's only hits.  McNamara went the distance in the circle and allowed only four earned runs in taking the loss.

Game 2 - VTSU Johnson 19, VTSU Lyndon 9

The Badgers pounded out 20 more hits and capitalized on five Lyndon errors in the nightcap.  Stingle had four hits, drove in two, and scored twice.  Zator and Corvino both collected three hits and three RBIs.  Nikki Sweet also drove in three with a pair of hits.  Stingle started in the circle and went 4.1 innings before giving way to Corvino.  Stingle allowed eight runs, three earned, on six hits with four strikeouts.

Lyndon's bats woke up in the nightcap, as the Hornets delivered nine hits and nine runs, both team season highs against NAC opponents.  Sarah Collier (Hardwick, VT) had a triple and a single, and three runs batted in.  Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) also had two hits, including a triple.  Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) and Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) both had a hit and scored twice.  McNamara, Richardson, and Murphy had the other Lyndon hits.  McNamara again took the complete game loss, allowing ten earned runs with four strikeouts.

Lyndon's scheduled Sunday doubleheader against Fisher College has been postponed until Friday due to expected inclement weather.  The Hornets will now take the field again on Tuesday when they travel to Bay Path University for a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
