Hornet men's tennis tops VTSU Castleton in season finale

Lyndonville, VT - In their final match of the season, Vermont State University Lyndon avenged an earlier loss by defeating VTSU Castleton, 5-4, at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.  Lyndon wrapped up the season with a 7-5 record, the most wins by a Hornet team since the 2010 season,  Castleton fell to 3-7.

With Castleton only having five available players, the Spartans spotted the Hornets points at Third doubles and sixth singles.  The two teams then split the remaining doubles flights.  Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT) bested Miki Almirall and Valero Echegoyen, 8-1, in first doubles.  Castleton returned the favor in second doubles, with the Spartan pairing of Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard coming away with an 8-0 win over Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT).

Castleton took the first singles point when Lyndon's Gilbert Flores (Winsted, CT) was forced to retire with his fifth singles match against Dylan Shiland in a first set tiebreaker.  The Hornets increased their lead to 4-2 when Gratton picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ciufo at second singles.  McIntyre's 6-4, 6-2 win over Maynard clinched the match for the Hornets.

With the match decided, Blais and Almirall staged the most competitive matchup of the day at first singles.  After Blais picked up the first set, 6-4, Almirall responded with a 6-4 win of his own in the second set.  Almirall took the 10-point tiebreaker, 11-9, to capture the match.  Echegoyen was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Wutzl in the final match of the day.

Tuesday's match was the final one for seniors Blais, Gratton, Wutzl, and Flores, along with James Salvas (Morrisville, VT), who was unavailable for the match.
