Hornet softball comes up with a big NAC sweep of VTSU Johnson

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermotn State University Lyndon softball team played on their home field for the first time this season on Tuesday afternoon.  The Hornets found the surroundings to their liking, as they swept a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Vermont State University Johnson.  Lyndon improved to 6-13 overall and 3-1 in conference, while Johnson fell to 3-10 on the season and 1-3 in conference.

Game 1 - VTSU Lyndon 7, VTSU Johnson 4

Johnson broke in front in the top of the first inning when Audrey Tembreull singled and later scored on Teylor Reddick's base hit.  The Hornets responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning when Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) beat out an infield hit and Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) drew a walk.  Both runners came home when Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) reached on an error.

Johnson tied the game in the top of the third.  Kristie Zator started things with a one-out single.  She advanced to second on a passed ball, then to third on Hannah Corvino's base hit.  Reddick then singled back up the middle to drive in Zator.

Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, NH) led off the Lyndon fourth inning with a base hit to center field.  She moved to second when Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) reached on an error, then to third when Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) grounded out.  Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) came through with a two-out single to drive in Glencross and put the Hornets back in front, 3-2.

Johnson quickly tied things in the top of the fifth inning when Corvino walked and came all the way around to score when the Hornets misplayed Grace Allen's base hit.

The Hornets again regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Southwprth singled with one out, then came all the way around to score on a Knapp double.  After Glencross singled to move Knapp to third, Seairra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) singled to score Howell and make it 5-3, Lyndon.

The Badgers got one run back with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning, but Lyndon opened up some breathing space in the bottom of the frame with two unearned runs of their own.

Emily Anderson got the complete game win in the circle for Lyndon.  She allowed two earned runs and scattered 12 hits while striking out four and walking two.  Corvino took the loss while allowing two earned runs herself along with eight hits, six strikeouts, and two walks.

Game 2 - VTSU Lyndon 16, VTSU Johnson 0

The nightcap was all Lyndon, as the Hornets plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.  Lyndon scored in each of the first four innings on the strength of 14 hits.  The Hornets also capitalized on eight Johnson errors.

Seairra Anderson was the hitting star for the Hornets.  She had a double and two singles, drove in four runs, and scored once.  Knapp added a pair of doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored.  Southworth had two hits and scored all four times that she reached base.  Watkins, McNamara, and Gonzalez also had two hits apiece.

McNamara was masterful in the circle in picking up the win.  She picked up the win and only allowed four Johnson hits over five innings.  Zator started for Johnson and took the loss.

Lyndon will host the State University of New York at Cobleskill this weekend with first place in the NAC's West division on the line.  The 3-1 Hornets and 4-0 Tigers will play two on Friday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.  They will run it back on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
