Stowe, VT - Norwich University swept all three doubles flights, then cruised to an 8-1 Empire 8 Conference men's tennis victory over Vermont State University Lyndon on Saturday. The Cadets improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference with the win, while the Hornets fell to 6-5 on the season and 2-3 in the E8.
The Norwich first doubles duo of Terrance Bayly-Henshaw and Jaxson Redmond got the Cadets off to a fast start with an 8-1 victory over Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY). Keagan Bakke and Gabe Wettig downed David Gratton (Newport, VT) and Gilbert Flores (Winsted, CT), 8-2, at number two. The Cadets then completed the doubles sweep when Stephen Hartigan and Hayden Frazer outlasted James Salvas (Morrisville, VT) and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT), 8-4, at third doubles.
Moving to singles play, Redmond made quick work of McIntyre, 6-0, 6-3, at third singles, then Bakke clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Blais in the first flight. In second singles, Gratton hung tough for a set before falling, 7-5, 6-0, to Bayly-Henshaw. Hartigan swept Flores, 8-0, at five. In the best match of the day, Wutzl came from behind to pick up Lyndon's only point of the day, defeating Wettig, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Brandon Adamson wrapped up the match with an 8-4 win over Salvas at sixth singles.
Prior to Saturday's match Lyndon recognized its five seniors, Blais, Flores, Gratton, Salvas, and Wutzl. They were presented gifts of appreciation for their contributions to Lyndon tennis and were joined on the court by family members and friends.
The Hornets will wrap up the season on Tuesday afternoon when they host Vermont State University Castleton in a non-conference match.
