Rutland, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's tennis team came up on the short end of a 7-2 result in their non-conference match against Vermont State University Castleton on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Spartans evened their season record at 1-1, while the Hornets fell to 2-2.
Castleton grabbed control of the match at the onset, comfortably sweeping the three doubles flights. the most competitive doubles match came at number three, where Castleton's Ben Chilkott and Trevor Castino were 8-3 winners over Lyndon's Gilbert Flores (Winsted, CT) and James Salvas (Morrisville, VT). Tanner Ciufo and Remy Maynard breezed to an 8-1 win over Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) at number two. In first doubles, Alberto Lantelme and Miki Almirall swept Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT), 8-0.
Singles play proved to be much more competitive. McIntyre won the best match of the day, downing Maynard, 10-6, in a third set tiebreaker at number three. Salvas picked up Lyndon's other win with an 8-5 por set victory over over Chilkott at sixth singles. First and second singles both went to Castleton in straight but closley contested sets, with Almirall defeating Blais, 6-4, 7-5, at number one and Ciufo defeating Gratton, 6-3, 6-4, at number two. Lantelme cruised past Wutzl at number four, and Castino won by injury retirement at number five.
The Hornets will return to the courts next Sunday, when they travel to NCAA Division II St. Michael's College for an 11:00 am match.
