Westfield, MA - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team dropped both ends of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at Westfield State University on Saturday afternoon. With the sweep the Owls improved to 12-2 on the season, while the Hornets remain winless in 11 starts.
Game 1 - Westfield State 7, VTSU Lyndon 3
The Hornets scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the hosts responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame and Westfield held off Lyndon the rest of the way. Sarah Hough had a triple and two singles to pace the Owls. Gianna Conte picked up the win in the circle after allowing two earned runs over 4.2 innings. Katherine Canty pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save.
Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) and Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, NH) had two hits apiece for Lyndon. Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL) went the distance in the circle and took the loss.
Game 2 - Westfield State 14, VTSU Lyndon 1
The Owls used a seven-run third inning to break open a one-run game. All nine Owls in teh batting order had at least one base hit, with Mia Alfonso leading the way with three base knocks. Janna Jose picked up the win in the circle.
Glencross and Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) both had two hits for the Hornets. Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH) took the complete game loss.
Lyndon will conclude its weekend in Massachusetts with a noon doubleheader at Elms College on Sunday.
