North Myrtle Beach, SC - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team played their final two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Sunday morning. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up on the short end of the score in both contests, falling to Lancaster Bible College, 10-0, and Wilson College, 10-1. The first game was the season opener for Lancaster Bible. Wilson improved to 2-3 with theiir win. The Hornets head north winless in seven contests.
Game 1 - Lancaster Bible 10, VTSU Lyndon 0
The Chargers scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Lancaster Bible pounded out 15 hits. Phoebe Clemens had three hits, driving in two runs and scoring twice. KariAnne Mecke also had three hits and two RBIs. Maddison Atkins picked up the win and the complete game shutout, striking out eight without walking a batter and allowing only four hits.
Anne Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) doubled for Lyndon's only extra base hit. Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT), Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ), and Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) had the other Hornet hist. Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL) took the loss, striking out five against two walks over four innings.
Game 2 - Wilson 10, VTSU Lyndon 1
Wilson plated two runs in the top of the first inning, but Lyndon got one back in the bottom half of the frame. Watkins led off woith a base hit and came around to score on a Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, NH) base hit. That turned out to be Lyndon's only run. Meanwhile Wilson pounded out 13 hits and pulled away, finally putting the game on ice with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Katelyn Keller had three hits and scored three times for the Phoenix. Kayla Talbert and Madison Briggs each notched two hits and two runs scored and Elena Worthington chipped in with a two-run double. Samantha Rybacki picked up the win, scattering six hits and striking out eight without issuing a walk over six innings.
Knapp, Gannon, Riley McNamara (Manchester, NH), and Sarah Collier (Hardwick, VT) had Lyndon's other hits. McNamara took the loss, allowing eight earned runs with one strikeout and three walks over six innings.
The Hornets are now off until March 19th, when they travel to Mitchell College for a non-conference doubleheader.
