North Myrtle Beach, SC - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team took the field twice on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. IN their first contest of the day, the Hornets couldn't generate any offense in an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Shawnee State University. The game was Lyndon's first countable regular season contest. Shawnee State, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school, improved to 3-0 on the season. In Lyndon's second outing of the day, the Hornets dropped a 3-1 exhibition decision to Brunswick Community College.
Game 1 - Shawne State 8, VTSU Lyndon 0
Shawnee State jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. After manufacturing a pair of runs in the first inning, The Bears' Lauren Spears delivered a three-run base hit in the top of the second. The Bears added an insurance run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
Spears was the hitting star for Shawnee State with three hits, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Jenna Christoher also had three hits while Sierra Dunnagan and Mackenzie Hale drove in two runs apiece.
That would prove to be more than enough for Shawnee State pitcher Cameryn Davidson, who scattered three hits and struck out five without issuing a walk over five shutout innings. Cassie Berry closed out the contest with two hitless innings of relief.
Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ), Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA), and Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) each had a base hit for Lyndon. Victoria Valentine (East Burke, VT) went the distance in the circle, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits while striking out two and walking a pair.
Game 2 - Brunswick CC 3, VTSU Lyndon 1 (exhibition)
In the Hornets's second game of the day, Brunswick's Kloe Sellers outdueled Lyndon's Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL) in the circle. Sellers scattered eight hits and only allowed a sixth inning run while striking out three. Quire gave up two earned runs and five hits while striking out three without issuing a walk.
Zoie Hamilton had three of Brunswick's five hits. Knapp had a single and a double and scored the Hornets' only run.
Lyndon will play three times on Friday. The day will start with their first game against a Division III opponent when they face Purchase College at 10:00 am. That will be followed by their final exhibition game of the tournament, a noon matchup with Monroe Community College. The Hornets will wrap up the day with a 4:00 pm rematch against Shawnee State.
