Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's tennis team wrapped up their 2023 season with a doubleheader against Thoams College on Sunday. The visiting Terriers swept both the North Atlantic Conference match and a non-conference matchup, both by 9-0 scores. Thomas improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in NAC play, while Lyndon finished winless in ten matches, including five conference outings.
Match 1 - Thomas 9, VTSU Lyndon 0
Thomas jumped in front by virtue of Lyndon injury retirements in third doubles and sixth singles. The Terriers picked up a pair of 8-0 wins in second and first doubles to take a 4-0 lead with five full singles matches remaining.
Thomas clinched the win when Michaela Rich closed out Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT), 6-0, 6-0, at number four. Thomas completed the sweep when Riley Pierce downed Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH), 6-1, 6-2 at number two, Tracy Lopez downed Christina McKivergan (Essex, VT), 6-3, 6-0, at number three, Lauren Smith beat Maachah Krull (Woodsville, NH), 6-1, 6-1, at one, and in the most competitive flight of the opening match, Maya Gammon held off Kadienne Whitcomb (West burke, VT), 6-1, 6-3 at five.
Match 2 - Thomas 9, VTSU Lyndon 0
The Terriers again benefited by three Hornet injury retirements. Smith and Pierce defeated Krull and Mack, 8-1 in first flight doubles. In the best doubles match of the day, Lopez and Rich got past Smith and McKivergan, 8-5, in second doubles.
Lauren Smith and Krull had a much more competitive match in first singles the second time around. Smith prevailed, 6-2, 6-4. Pierce and Lopez got by Sage Smith and McKivergan for the second time, and Ceileidh Harnum beat Whitcomb, 6-1, 6-0, at fifth singles.
The Hornets didn't have any seniors in the lineup on Sunday, and hope to return a much more experienced squad in 2024.
