Hornet softball battles back for a doubleheader split at UMaine-Farmington

Farmington, ME - After dropping the opener of today's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the University of Maine at Farmington in extra innings, Northern Vermont University-Lyndon rebounded for an 11-3 win in the nightcap to earn a split on the day.  Lyndon is now 10-19 overall while UMF closes their season at 6-21.  Both teams finish NAC play at 4-6.

Game 1 - UMaine-Farmington 7, NVU-Lyndon 6

The Hornets and Beavers battled into the 11th inning before the game was decided.  Lyndon grabbed the lead in the top of the 11th when pinch runner Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) scored on Riann Fortin's (Derby, VT) ground out.  The Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Mackenzie Dyer reached on an error, allowing Olivia Paradis to score.  Dyer later scored on a passed ball to give the Beavers the walkoff win.

Carleigh Schievink had a big game at the plate for UMF with three hits and three runs scored.  Kiley Merritt had two hits and two runs batted in.  Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT) had three hits apiece for the Hornets.  Victoria Valentine (Burke, VT) and Audrey Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) added two hits each.

Schievink pitched all 11 innings to pick up the win.  She only allowed one earned run while striking out eight.  Hannah Corvino (Milford, NJ) took the loss for Lyndon despite only allowing one earned run in 7.1 innings of relief.

Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 11, UMaine-Farmington 3

The Hornets took a seven run lead after only an inning and a half and never looked back.  Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) led the Lyndon attack with three doubles in four at bats.  She had five runs batted in and three runs scored.  Fortin added two hits and three runs batted in while Tembreull and Seairra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) chipped in with two hits apiece.  Chelsea Davis led UMF with two hits and two rruns batted in.

Valentine went the distance to pick up the win for Lyndon.  She scattered 11 hits and struck out four while walking four.  Beaver starter Grace Martin took the loss.

The Hornets will conclude their season on Tuesday afternoon when they host Fisher College in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
