Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon combined a pair of stellar pitching performances with some timely hitting to sweep Saturday's doubleheader against Northern Vermont University-Johnson. The Hornets prevailed, 8-0, in the opener, which was a North Atlantic Conference contest. Lyndon followed that up with a 9-1 victory in the non-conference nightcap. Lyndon improved to 8-15 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. Johnson fell to 5-16 overall and 0-6 in the NAC.
Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 8, NVU-Johnson 0
Junior pitcher Victoria Valentine (Burke, VT) was the story of the opener. Valentine allowed only three hits in her first complete game shutout of the season. She struck out one batter and only walked one. Valentine also helped her cause at the plate. She drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning to drive in the first run of the game. Her two-run base hit in the second helped ignite a six-run inning that broke the game open.
Riann Sortin (Derby, VT) had a two-run home run in the big second frame. Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) had a pair of hits and drove in one run for the Hornets.
Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 1
Hannah Corvino (Milford, NJ) nearly duplicated Valentine's performance in game two. She nursed a 1-0 lead through four and a half innings before the Hornets put five runs on the board in the home fifth to open some breathing room. Johnson capitalized on a Lyndon error in the top of the sixth to score an unearned run, the only run off of Corvino. She finished with four strikeouts against one walk while scattering six hits.
Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) had a big game at the plate for the Hornets. She was three for four at the plate with a double, two runs batted in, and two runs scored.Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT) had a pair of hits and reached base three times in four plate appearances.
Makenna Drake and Mariah Muskin had two hits apiece for Johnson. Mushkin also went the distance in the circle and was victimized by defensive breakdowns behind her. Lyndon capitalized on five Badger errors as none of the Hornets' nine runs were earned.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday when Norwich University comes to the Skip Pound Softball Complex for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
