Brighton, MA - Sophomore designated hitter Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) got Northern Vermont University-Lyndon going with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning and the Hornets never looked back, cruising to a 12-2 non-conference victory over Fisher College on Sunday evening. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to below freezing temperatures after nightfall. With the win, Lyndon improved to 4-5 on the season. Fisher remains winless in 15 games.
Adriana Lemieux (St. Johnsbury, VT) drew a walk leading off the game. Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) followed with a base hit, setting the stage for Knapp's blast.
Fisher got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Ariana Cardona led off with a base hit and came around to score on Skyler Bedford's triple. Hornet pitcher Victoria Valentine (Burke, VT) stranded Cardona at third by striking out the next three Falcon batters.
Lyndon got the run back in the top of the third inning. Southworth and Knapp started things wiht back to back singles. After Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) hit into a fielder's choice, Knapp scored an unearned run when Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) reached on a misplayed fielder's choice.
After Fisher scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the third inning, Lyndon put the game away with two runs in the foruth, three in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. With two out in the fourth, Lemieux beat out an infield hit and Southworth followed with a base hit to center field. Knapp then laced a double down the left field line to score both runners.
Lyndon capitalized on a pair of Fisher errors to plate three in the top of the fifth inning, then Valentine's two-run triple keyed a three-run sixth to complete the scoring.
Valentine picked up the complete game victory by allowing only one earned run and scattering seven hits. She struck out seven against two walks. Fisher's Madison Kelley went the distance in taking the loss. She allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits.
The Hornets return to the diamond for another non-conference doubleheader at Emerson College next Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
